Our successes can always be traced to our
ability to do things when they are meant to be done. Though this may not always
directly guarantee success, it certainly determines how much access to
opportunity you can leverage.
The habit of deferring what needs to be
done in the immediate for later is the greatest enemy to time. In order to
defeat this habit, you need to develop a better habit as follows:
SET
MAIN GOAL
Goal setting is essential in handling a
project and in daily living. Goal should be set on paper not in the mind. This major goal specifies what you want to do
without ambiguity. It should also be measurable, so that you can track
progress. This goal must be achievable, not so big that it is difficult to
achieve. It also has to be realistic, meaning that within available accessible
resources, the goal can be achieved. The goal has to also be timed. This would
give you reason to be time conscious. I suggest that the time should not be in
such a way that it would put much pressure on you, it should be a guide. For instance
in the next six months, I would have read three books on Leadership.
SET
MINOR GOALS
This is necessary to enforce the
achievement of the main goal. It should prescribe key performance indicators,
which should become the measurable indices for the level of success being
achieved.
In the case of the goal being considered
here, it should include when to buy the books. Will you buy the three once or differently?
Then decide how many chapters you should read per day to meet the goal of
reading them within six months. This is necessary realizing that reading these
books will not be the only things you would be doing within those six months.
Setting daily goals and weekly goals are
ultimately necessary if you will be delivered from procrastination.
ACCOUNTABILITY
This has to do with publicly saying what
you want to do to your spouse, or siblings and friends. The essence is so they
can hold you accountable by asking you how far you had gone. Also by reminding
you if you are achieving it as you purposed to do, you will be motivated to
always do something on the goals, so that you can have a response for your
accountability partners.
COURAGE
Sometimes
procrastination is borne out of fear of failure. Courage is taking action in
spite of fear. Therefore you have the responsibility of psyching yourself at
all times and building confidence within you until you develop courage to act
on situations per time.
